Subject: Graduate P/D/F and SGCO Date: Saturday, August 26, 2006 Dear MIT graduate students, As you may have heard, there has been an ongoing effort to implement an option for graduate students to take classes beyond their core requirement on Pass/D/Fail. Attached is a letter describing this effort. We are hoping to push ahead during the early fall. We are writing you to solicit applications for the student steering committee, Students on Graduate Curriculum Options (SGCO). The purpose of SGCO is to examine the various issues regarding a proposed P/D/F option and to recommend one or several possible implementations of a P/D/F option. This committee is to be comprised of the following positions: Chairpersons /Emily Fox and Stephen Hou/ Secretary Members-at-large- /preference will be given to achieve departmental diversity/ SGCO is not affiliated with any particular student group or department. However, as P/D/F would impact all graduate programs, we do encourage potential SGCO members to be open to input from members of their departments or student groups. We already have wide support for this proposal, but there is still a long bureaucratic process which must be followed. We hope that a test pilot of the program will be in place by Spring 2007. This is an opportunity to be involved in what we hope will be an important curricular change in graduate learning. On the committee you will learn the ins and outs of MIT as well as have face time with some important big-wigs. The current plan is for SGCO to meet once every two weeks and as necessary. If you are interested in applying, please send an email to sgco@mit.edu with the following information: Name: Department: Year: Previous committee experience: Why you want to be on the SGCO: Sincerely, Emily Fox and Stephen Hou sgco@mit.edu
