Web Meta-resources

A good overview document is The Guide to Network Resource Tools which is a hypertext version of RFC 1580 / FYI 23. A Beginner's Guide to Cyberspace is a helpful introduction to the Web and other info sources on the net.

A number of places try and track new things on the Web using various techniques. The grandfather of all is NCSA's What's New page which collects announcements they are sent by E-mail. They keep them back forever, filed a month at a time. Near the end of the month, the "current" file can get pretty long, so someone has an automatic setup to excerpt the most recent stuff. The newsgroup comp.infosystems.announce carries announcements as well, and there's a collection of past messages catalogued and indexed. The InterNIC's Scout Report is provided as part of their task of scouring the net for info. Looking into Brandon Plewe's Best of the Web contest is also a good place to find useful sites.

• There is a searchable index of the newsgroup comp.infosystems.www.announce which is useful for finding old announcements of services.

• Another WWW Catalog being maintained by a university in Geneva.
• The NCSA Mosaic Demo Document has an interesting list in it.
• Internet Resources Meta-Index at NCSA.
• The Clearinghouse for Subject-Oriented Internet Resource Guides.
• The Info Deli has some useful stuff and lots of pointers.
• Joel Jones at UIUC maintains Joel's Hierarchical Subject Index, a very good Meta-reference.
• The experimental DA-CLOD database is another good example of a categorization database, assumoing it gets enough contributors...
• The Jump Station maintains a searchable list of all Titles it knows.
• SIMON, an experimental system for resource discovery and navigation on the internet, with WWW search interface.
• The WORLD WIDE WEB WORM (WWWW) has an extensive index and you can search titles, text and references...i.e. what pages reference my server.
• A guide to the web from John December (decemj@rpi.edu) is very informative and comprehensive. He's done lots of other good stuff, see his personal page for info.
